2009 Sauvignon Blanc Green Valley of Russian River Valley

2009 Sauvignon Blanc Green Valley of Russian River Valley

Our first release from Green Valley is this powerful wine, wild with guava, mango, passion fruit, key lime, crème brulee and sealed with a lemon kiss!!  This wine is passionate with crisp acidity on the finish, another double gold medal winner from our winemaker!  She only bottles wines she wants to drink!

Our wine is 100% Sauvignon blanc.  This special clone of Sauvignon blanc is called Sauvignon Musque and is a delight to work with.  It's a rare clone and difficult to find, but we have found our grower and are counting on producing a little more each coming harvest.  Our pedigree on this wine is unique;  Green Valley of Sonoma Coast of Russian River of Sonoma County.  Now that is a mouthful, both in words and taste!!  This wine comes from a special place, and so it has four American Viticultural Areas to say so!!

We harvested these grapes during the cold mornings in October – the grapes were only 38F when we crushed them into the press.  The fermentation was slow and cool at 45F for 18 days.  We put the resulting wine into very old barrels (10 YEAR OLD) and began stirring the lees for the next 120 days to give the rich, creamy mouth-feel on for this glorious wine.

THE MOST DISTINCTIVE AVA
OF THE NORTH COAST

Green Valley is one of the smallest appellations in Sonoma County. It lies in the southwestern part of the Russian River Valley, bounded by the towns of Sebastopol, Forestville and Occidental. It is very tightly delineated, both geographically and climatically, and is the most consistent of any North Coast appellation in terms of soil, climate and flavor.

The fog is Green Valley’s trademark. The predominant soil type (60%) of this American Viticultural Area (AVA) is Goldridge soil, the most sought-after type in Sonoma County—especially for Pinot Noir and Sauvignon blanc.  There are over 100 growers in the area.

TEMPERATURE PROFILES

Perhaps the most important determining aspect of the area is its diurnal temperature profile—the difference between the peak heat of the day and the coolest pre-dawn hours—which result from its elevation and proximity to the ocean. On the North Coast, there are five benchmark climatic regions: valley, mountain, coastal, coastal mountain, and inland mountain. Green Valley falls into the coastal climatic region, which is distinguished by relatively narrow temperature swings and, most importantly, by cooler daytime readings, typically ranging from the low 50s to the mid 80s during the peak growing season (from veraison to harvest).

Only 300 cases produced.

Vineyard Notes:This vineyard is tucked up against the low rolling hills in western Sebastapol. Snuggled up between old redwood forest and 100 year old apple orchards. I love to pick up a windfall apple when I am in the vineyard - please don't tell on me!
Vintage Notes:Our vineyard is deep in Sebastapol and grows between redwood trees and old apple orchards. Very cool climate makes this variety ripen very late and we picked it after two rain storms. The fruit was perfect when it arrived at the winery.
Winemakers Notes:Sauvignon blanc is such a gorgeous wine to make. The fruit is so aromatic and easy to work with. The gooseberry-guava -pineapple is so enticing and exquisite!
